A lot of supplements on the market claim to help with menopause symptoms. Maca is of the few scientifically proven to work.
But maca isn't some manufactured supplement from a lab.
It's a root vegetable from the mountains of Peru and has been used for centuries to help balance hormones and ease the symptoms of menopause.
One study showed that taking 3 grams of maca per day for 12 weeks significantly reduced hot flashes and night sweats in menopausal women.
Another study showed that 2.5 grams of maca per day resulted in increased bone density in postmenopausal women.
When choosing a maca supplement, look for one that is certified organic and free of additives.
You'll also want to make sure your maca supplement is "gelatinized" since this form is easier to absorb.
Start with a lower dose and increase gradually until you find the amount that works best for you.
Maca is generally considered safe - it's a lot like a potato - however, it's always a good idea to talk to your doctor before starting any new supplement.
Me? (It's good for men's hormones, too.) I get mine at Wegman's here in Timonium, MD in the "smoothie ingredients" section by the whey protein, cacao nibs, moringa, etc. I swirl a tsp or so in a little water and chug it down.
It tastes fine - not great, not heinous.
Give maca a try and let me know how it goes for you.
