One our personal training clients at our gym in Timonium just asked me a question I get virtually every day from women over 45:

“How do I lose this [grabs body part]?”

I told her my signature sound bite bite:

“You have no more control over where you lose fat than you did over where you gained it.”

I’ve heard a couple of respectable trainers say they have $ystems (clever, huh) that will burn body fat in specific parts of your body.

It may sound really good and may even “work“– but only to a barely discernible degree and with a huge expenditure of your valuable time.

Don’t waste your time with isolated spot reduction exercises. Compound exercises (that’s using multiple joints) are far more efficient and effective.

Here's proof ...

Experimenters asked one group of women to do upper body exercises only while another group did lower body exercises only.

Both groups of women lost fat in the same pattern regardless of what exercises they did.

Where you gain fat - and where you lose it - is determined by your hormones and your genetics, NOT by specific exercises.

Bottom line ..

The standard fat loss protocols apply:

- Keep cortisol levels down by minimizing stress and sleeping well

- Eat right (whatever demonstrably works for YOU)

- Lift real weights at least twice a week

- Enjoy the process
