What we now call granola (originally, “granula”) was invented in 1863 and started as unsweetened bran nuggets soaked in milk.

(So the “tradition” of cereal and milk started only 160 years ago.)

Today, even our official dietary guidelines label granola “a grain-based dessert” - like doughnuts, cookies and cake.

Here’s why:

Bear Naked Honey Almond Granola
- 20 grams of sugar per serving

Nature Valley Oats ’n Honey Protein Granola
- 24 grams of sugar (actually more sugar than protein)

Nature Valley Peanut Butter ’n Dark Chocolate Protein Granola
- 30 grams of sugar (same let's-put-"Protein"-in-the-name scam as above)

Compare that to:

- a cup of ice cream >> 28 grams of sugar

- a slice of chocolate cake with frosting >> 26 grams

- even a Krispy Kreme glazed doughnut has only 10 grams of sugar

My simple advice ...

Skip the granola.

Better advice ...

Have a protein-rich breakfast.

A recent study showed that a protein-rich breakfast led to naturally healthier food choices throughout the day without even trying (!) which then led to easy weight loss.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
